BlackMagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K: An insane amount of Resolution?
BlackMagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K was unveiled by the company yesterday. Blackmagic is a company synonymous with cinema. Very many movies in Hollywood have been shot with the BlackMagic Cinema cameras namely Green Book, Moonlight among others. Yesterday the company unveiled its new camera the Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro 12k. Yes, you read that right, 12K resolution which is totally overkill which is not to say it may have its audience. Let’s see what all the hype is about!
The new camera is actually not all that new; it is the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro which can shoot in 12K. The original one could shoot in 4.6K. The new model has a 12288 x 6480 Super 35 sensor capable of capturing 12K footage at 60 frames per second, 8K at 110 fps, and cropped 4K Super 16 at 220 fps. The camera uses the PL mount as it is compatible with a wide range of cinema lenses. It can be swapped for Canon EF and Nikon F mounts. The camera also includes a built-in ND filters and USB-C 3.1 Genaration2 expansion port fro faster data transfer to external SSDs.
If it isn’t obvious by now, no-one has 12K monitor lying around and the creators are aware that the BalckMagic Ursa Mini 12K isn’t designed for projects that will actually be viewed in 12K. Instead, the company states that extra pixels can help to produce a cleaner image in 8K or 4K through downsampling and also can let you crop in post-production without losing any resolution. Davinci, the software by BlackMagic is already capable if editing 12K footage whereas the camera’s built-in compression can store 4K, 6K and 8K versions at once for instant exporting.
The camera is a similar approach to BlackMagic’s pocket Cinema Camera 6K which also holds a high-res Super 35 sensor but is designed for 4K or HD projects. The Ursa Mini Pro 12K is a much much more expensive camera in comparison and is obviously and only film and Tv professionals would ever consider buying it.
The price for the BlackMagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K is said to be $9,995 and is not exactly a very expensive cinema camera but also, it does not have a direct competitor. The company said the camera will be available worldwide later this month.
